[ throws them into the haunted house where iwatooshi, properly dressed, are struggling to navigate the place. he tries to make a turn, naginata swinging wide, but it pulls just short of slamming into laudna. ]

Ah, Laudna-dono! My apologies. [ giving a slight bow! ] I believe this place may be too small to accommodate my size.

[she seems perfectly normal - the same sort of bright, exaggerated cheerfulness as always. maybe even more than usual.]

[ he's still in a bit of a subdued mood tonight, grip tight on the staff of his naginata. he seems to be deep in thought. ]

Laudna-dono.

[ just a quiet greeting today, lacking the usual enthusiasm. ]

What do you think of Death-dono? It feels as if we didn't get any closer to answers for what happened to him.

[this reaction from him is so reassuring somehow. she seems a little subdued, kind of uneasy, but she relaxes a bit at the question.]

Laudna-dono! [ touches her shoulder! ] Care for an apple? They're very refreshing after a week of bland food, gahaha!

[ they'll also get you high if you're interested in that! ]

I only eat a little nibble here and there, but if they're truly so good...

I think anything would be a welcome change after the refectory's food. Ah, but maybe I've been too spoiled after a few years in the citadel... but taste is one of my favorite things about having a human body.

[she will curtsy in return. she's looking a bit subdued, too. not too upset or angry, just a little blank.]

Ah. Just as last week. We'll have to solve it on their terms.

week 2, monday

[ he's gonna be out by the toyama residence today, peeking around curiously! ]

It's almost like home... but with some new things I don't recognize.

[ too bad he won't get to explain that... the darkness steals them away for a memory to play out before them:

he flinches, ready to receive the blow - but it never comes. you stop before it can connect, frozen in place, until finally, he drops character to look at you questioningly. you step back, mortified.

"I can't do it. I can't hit you," you tell him flatly, turning away. hurting your precious friend, your partner... how could you ever bring yourself to do that? it's one of the toughest battles you've ever faced.

"Iwatooshi! This is our rehearsal of the 'The Subscription List'!"

"Still, I can't do what I can't do," you insist, settling down with the staff at your side. he keeps badgering you about it to convince you to try again. that is, until a pair of new faces come to greet you both - the new touken danshi you were told about, surely. imanotsurugi lights up, happily introducing himself to the newcomers. you ignore them, until a name catches your attention, heart sinking.

"I am Higekiri."

no, it couldn't be. but the other confirms your fears: "I'm Hizamaru."

so this is what kogitsunemaru tried to warn you about - the treasured swords of genji brothers, yoritomo and yoshitsune. there's no world where you wouldn't recognize those names, those crests. but these swords... you've never met them before today.

as imanotsurugi greets them properly, you finally rise to your feet to face them yourself, though you can't bring yourself to smile as you normally would.

"Higekiri-sama and Hizamaru-sama, right? My name is Iwatooshi."

"It's nice to meet you, Iwatooshi," Higekiri says, stepping forward. you avert your eyes and tuck the staff under your arm to leave.

"Well, excuse us. Let's go, Imanotsurugi."

and you walk away without another word. it's very rude, you're well aware, but this isn't something you're prepared to face right now. it's best to leave it, gather your thoughts, and approach it again later. it's safer that way, for imanotsurugi.

iwatooshi breathes out a heavy sigh once the memory ends, turning his eyes away in shame. ]

[she looks at him when the memory ends, mildly concerned, more curious than anything.]

...Why? Why were you angry at them?

[also he's a sword i guess she takes this news in stride.]

week 6, wednesday

BOO!

[ this is not going to scare laudna and he knows it, but iwatooshi laughs. ]

I've been told that's what ghosts are supposed to say! What do you think, Laudna-dono?
