So many people? Our number's hardly anything compared to my citadel. [ he laughs a bit. ] But you're still getting used to the world, are you? And now they've brought you here, of all places. I understand why you'd be overwhelmed.
[ it's a cruel twist of fate, isn't it. ]
It may be tough, here, but there's just as much good in the world as there is bad. You'll find what makes it special before long... sometimes it takes these hard experiences to do it.
[it's so much. it's... so different from home, too, even setting aside the threat of death hanging over them now.]
It... would be preferable if it didn't take hard experiences for that, b-but... if you're really as old as your paper says, then you must have more experience than I could even begin imagining.
[so he literally... is the weapon? mathis glances between him and the naginata a few times, leaning in to look at it, hands laced behind his back so that he doesn't touch.]
So you've been there for so many years, but only as, um... the... ghost of a weapon-?
Ghosts are usually the spirits of living creatures that can't pass into the afterlife, aren't they? But I have always been this naginata. My spirit was born from years of care and use from my former master. I was never truly alive the same way as you until I was given this body.
Hahaha! I couldn’t have said it better myself! I wouldn’t be who I am today without my former master, just as I wouldn’t be here at all if not my current master.

What sort of things are you used to, if not that?

[he is but a little shut-in.]

-a-are you?

But I wasn't born human, so you could say that I'm just as inexperienced as you are, in some ways. I'm still learning about the world, too.

[huh. he's looking at him curiously, there.]
Then, may I ask what you were born as?

[ iwa shifts so he can get a better look at it, though the sharp edge of the blade is pointed away from mathis. ]
My current master gave me this body just a few years ago. Before then, I was just a spirit.

[ beams! ]
You have a way with words, Mathis-dono.
